Ibini quits Jets, set to join Wanderers

Western Sydney are expected to land another wantaway A-League player following Bernie Ibini's exit from Newcastle on Thursday.

The 28-year-old, who has made two Socceroos appearances, was granted an early release from his contract with the Jets after a troubled stint in Newcastle.

Ibini was signed by former coach Carl Robinson in February but had been seeking an exit after Robinson departed the Jets to join the Wanderers in October.

When the club refused to release him, Ibini went on a period of stress leave.

Less than a fortnight before the season starts, the Jets - still without a permanent head coach and in the process of trying to find a new owner - granted Ibini his wish, freeing him up to reunite with Robinson at the Wanderers.

"We want to have players at our club who want to be here and play for the jersey," Jets' chief executive Lawrie McKinna said.

Ibini made six appearances for the Jets, scoring one goal.

Should he sign with the Wanderers, he'll be their second capture this week after landing ex-Socceroo James Troisi following his acrimonious exit from Adelaide United.

Troisi's departure disappointed the Reds who felt they had made it clear the 32-year-old was a required player after he failed to land a move away from Hindmash Stadium in September.

But the Asian Cup winner defended his decision, telling the Sydney Morning Herald it had been made clear he was no longer wanted at Adelaide and his hometown club was being "childish" in their response.
