Investors need to know whether a company can grow and meet the challenges of sustainability, especially in the face of fast-changing economic and political conditions. It's not just about how "green" a company is. Also essential is a company's ability to make solid returns in all types of market environments.
Clean energy solutions to help catalyze the global energy transition top investors' lists of investment priorities. A 2025 survey from Morgan Stanley of active individual investors in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific shows that investors ranked renewable energy and energy efficiency as top investment priorities. Some 80% see the energy transition as an opportunity to generate returns.
North America respondents placed greater focus on health care affordability and innovation, while investors in Europe and APAC put more emphasis on energy storage and battery technology as well as regenerative agriculture and sustainable land use.

Sustainable Stocks: How IBD Created Its Lists
To build IBD's 2025 list of the Most Sustainable Companies, we started with Morningstar's U.S. and global Low Carbon Transition Leaders Indexes. These indexes provide exposure to companies from each sector that are taking the most action toward transitioning to a low-carbon economy. We sorted the constituents of the Morningstar indexes using IBD technical and fundamental stock ratings.
Morningstar Sustainalytics provides an overall climate management score of 0 to 100. This indicates the strength of a company's systems for managing its exposure to the low-carbon transition. A score of 46 to 55 is average, 56 to 75 is strong, and 76 to 100 is very strong.
