In Ibaraki Prefecture, a man in his 30s at Hitachi Ltd.'s Mito office was found to be infected with the virus. The man returned home on Feb. 28 from a business trip to Italy. Since March 5, the man has been suffering from a fever and cough, and he tested positive for the new coronavirus on March 17. Hitachi has closed the five-story building where the man worked, with about 1,000 people who work in the same building staying at home until March 25.

In Kagawa Prefecture, a self-employed man in his 50s in Marugame was found to be infected with the virus.

In Tokyo, 12 people were found to have been infected with the virus, pushing the number affected in the capital to over 100.

There are cases where people who returned to Japan from abroad have been infected with the virus. A woman in her 20s in Otsu who had traveled for about a month to 10 countries, including Thailand and France, was found to be infected with the virus. In Miyazaki Prefecture, a man in his 20s who returned to his parents' home in the prefecture after working overseas was found to have contracted the disease.

The Sagamihara city government announced that a man in his 80s who had been confirmed to be infected with the virus has died. The man was diagnosed with pneumonia after being hospitalized on Feb. 6 at a medical institution in the city for a gastrointestinal disease. He was confirmed to be infected with the virus on Feb. 18. The cause of death was the chronic gastrointestinal disease.

No new cases were reported in Hokkaido on Tuesday. It was the first time since Feb. 18, a span of 28 days, that there have been no new infections in Hokkaido.
