The Maharashtra government on Tuesday appointed senior IAS officer Sumeet Mallick as the new chief secretary of the state. He will succeed Swadhin Kshatriya who is retiring on February 28. An officer from the 1982 batch, Mallick was working as additional chief secretary and chief protocol officer. He is expected to take charge of his new responsibility from this evening. Mallick confirmed the development with HT.

Chief Secretary is the head of state administration and is responsible for day to day functioning of the government machinery as well as execution of decisions taken by elected government. A low-profile officer, Mallick will get a tenure of more than a year and will retire in April, 2018.

Kshatriya, the incumbent chief secretary, was to retire on January 31 but was given a month’s extension following the request made by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis owing to the recently concluded elections of 10 municipal corporation and 25 zilla parishads (ZPs).

In addition, Kshatriya is likely to be appointed as the first chief commissioner under Right to Services Act. The act was introduced to ensure delivery of essential services in the specific time period.
