Ianis Hagi's Rangers transfer nets dad Gheorghe's club a six-figure windfall

Ianis Hagi's move to Rangers has netted dad Gheorghe's club a tidy £600,000 windfall.

Romanian side Viitorul Constanta inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause into the playmaker's contract when he signed for Genk.

Rangers have now made Hagi 's loan from the Belgians permanent after making a positive impression following his January arrival.

And that's good news for the 21-year-old's last club in his homeland after they sold him to Genk for £7 million last summer.

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid icon Gheorghe owns and manages Viitorul since forming them 11 years ago, who also sold him to Fiorentina in 2016, bought him back two years later and then sold him again to Genk.

It means Hagi senior's club have earned almost £10 million out of sales of Ianis - £2 million from Fiorentina, £7 million from Genk and then a further £600,000 in a sell-on clause after his move to Rangers.

And their club's president - former Barcelona and Spurs star Gica Popescu, who is also Hagi senior's brother-in-law - admitted he was delighted Rangers chose to go through with their option to buy the 21-year-old.

He said: "We were obviously expecting this transfer because we had information from Scotland and we knew Rangers wanted him very much.

"It was always only going to be a matter of time before he became an official Rangers player.

"I believe this transfer is an important step in Ianis' career. He needed continuity and he's at a club and a coach who wanted him very much.

"And he's playing in front of passionate fans who have loved him from the start. He's at Rangers on merit.

"Now everyone at the club is waiting for Ianis to take the next step which would be to become an automatic starter for the national team."
