Ianis Hagi and the potential Rangers Champions League problem Steven Gerrard will keep a close eye on

Rangers will be keeping a close eye on Ianis Hagi's progress at the Olympics this summer if the champions allow him to participate - as a successful tournament could mean he misses crucial Champions League qualifiers.

The Romanian FA has announced it will soon open discussions with clubs over releasing players for this summer's football tournament in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Premiership champions Rangers will enter European qualifying at the third round but will already be without suspended Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara.

And with Hagi named in Romania's provisional squad by Mirel Radoi, he too could miss out.

It's a similar situation to Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard after it was revealed he could miss up to four Hoops qualifiers.

But with Rangers not entering until the third round, Romania would need to reach the semi-finals before it becomes an issue.

Radoi said: "Our aim is to win an Olympic medal in Tokyo and to do that we want our best players for the tournament."

Rangers have no obligation to release their players for the tournament.

FIFA stated: "The men’s Olympic Football Tournament, as well as all FIFA competitions with age restrictions, are not included in the men’s international match calendar 2018-2024, and thus clubs are not under the obligation to release players for the competition."

But Mihai Stoichita, Romanian FA director, has revealed he will be contacting Rangers to ask them to release Hagi soon.

He said: "We have to see what agreements we will have with the clubs. We will wait to see which clubs are at what stage in European competition and then negotiate with them.

"We have been drawn in a favourable group and we want to take advantage of this by having our strongest squad.

"Obviously, it will be easier to negotiate with clubs in Romania than the ones in Europe.

"But we are sympathetic to the needs of the clubs in Europe and hope to come to arrangements with them."
