Ianis Hagi receives Romania boost as Rangers star chosen among foreign-based players on standby for World Cup tilt

Rangers star Ianis Hagi has been chosen in a list of 22 Romanian players who are on notice for an impending call-up to the international side.

The Ibrox playmaker currently has 14 caps for his national side and with World Cup 2022 qualifiers on the horizon is set to be part of a campaign to reach the Qatar finals.

The Romanian Football Federation typically publishes a list of foreign-based players who are included in a preliminary squad for international matches although some will be cut to make way for domestic-based stars.

And Hagi is front and centre of the list with fellow midfielder Nicolae Stanciu also included.

Much of the discourse back in his homeland concerns the Rangers man and Slavia Prague man Stanciu, who is more experienced with a 42-cap haul.

Pundits in Romania believe it's a straight shootout between the two players to be included in Mirel Radoi's team as the prime creator.

And that has added an intriguing sub-plot to the meeting between the two clubs in the Europa League last 16 later this month.

Romania take on North Macedonia, Germany and Armenia in a triple header to kick-off their group at the end of March.
