Bombshell reports from Romania claim that Rangers have agreed a deal to sell Ianis Hagi in January.
Both Pro TV and Sport have reported that Roma are ready to pay €20million (£17m) to take the 22-year-old back to Serie A after a previous spell with Fiorentina.
While Steven Gerrard will be keen to hang on to one of his star men, resurfaced comments from agent Giovani Becali give an insight into the rumoured interest.
Roma are managed by Jose Mourinho who, if the representative is to be believed, wanted the Romanian in his time at Tottenham, although Hagi is now represented by AC Talent.
Becali told Sport Report back in 2020: " Txiki Begiristain (sporting director at Manchester City ), Jose Mourinho and many further managers and sporting directors called me and asked about Ianis.
"Ianis is on a good way. I think Rangers will exercise their option (in his initial loan deal), because he’s the only player in the squad who can make the difference.
"Usually the Scots don’t like it, but if they are successful, they love his dribbles."
The Special One has already been instrumental in bringing Rui Patricio and Tammy Abraham to the Eternal City, and has been linked with a move for Diego Dalot.
However, Mourinho was in no mood to discuss transfers this week.
Asked in a press conference about the possibility of adding another midfielder he said: "The transfer window is closed and you're already trying to get me to talk about it.
"I understand the question but I'm not going to answer, that's the approach I've always taken even after wins.
"We lost a game (to Verona) and I have nothing more to say to you (the media)."
