Ianis Hagi Rangers recovery has been 'prolonged' as Romania boss admits he's in the dark over timeline

Romania boss Edi Iordanescu has revealed Ianis Hagi told him his recovery period has been 'prolonged' and he still has no idea when he will be back in action for club or country.

The Rangers star has been out since January after suffering an ACL injury in a Scottish Cup tie against Stirling Albion and he underwent an operation. Hagi's father Gheorghe admitted last month that there were no guarantees his son would return to action by the end of the year as he continues his battle back to full fitness.

And Romanian boss Iordanescu contacted Hagi to discover the latest timescale on his return for himself. He said: "Three days ago I had a discussion with Ianis Hagi. His recovery process has been prolonged. He couldn't tell me anything concrete either regarding a date for his return. He is under the observation of the medical staff at the club.

"Of course, if he were to return before the end of the year, that would be good and he would immediately become an option for selection. And he still remains positive and confident."

Hagi senior accepted last month that his recovery was going to be a long process. He said: "I don't know whether Ianis will play this year or not. He is in his last period of rehabilitation, but that won't be a short period of time either. It takes time.

"He has returned to light training and he is beginning to get used to the effort and power required that you need on the pitch. We are all hoping he comes back as soon as possible.

"I'm not in Glasgow, so I don't know exactly how well he is doing. The Rangers doctors and medical staff...they will know his progress a lot better than me."
