Ianis Hagi on Galatasaray transfer wanted list as Rangers star's 'first love' react to new ruling

Galatasaray are reportedly set to ‘step up’ their pursuit of Rangers’ Ianis Hagi.

A new Turkish Super Lig ruling means clubs must have no fewer than eight home-grown players in their matchday squad.

Despite being Romanian, Hagi would add to the quota after being born and growing up in Turkey.

Legendary father Gheorghe is a Gala legend, spending five years with the club between 1996 and 2001 before retiring.

And Turkish outfit Yeni Safak claim that Hagi has now jumped up Galatasary’s list of transfer priorities as a result of the new regulations on Turkish-produced players.

Hagi arrived at Ibrox in January 2020, initially on loan from Genk but with an option to buy.

Steven Gerrard okayed a £3million permanent switch for the 22-year-old and while he’s proved a valuable addition to the Rangers squad, has been in and out of the team this season on occasion.

There’s also doubts over his availability for the Gers’ Champions League qualifiers.

Hagi is keen to represent Romania at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which clash with the ties Rangers must successfully negotiate in order to reach the lucrative group stages.

Galatasaray also have a strong emotional pull for Hagi, who previously admitted it would be a dream to play for the Turkish giants one day and follow in his dad’s footsteps.

He said: "One day, I'd like to play for Galatasaray.

"It's a club I love, I grew up with that club in my heart.

"I was born there. I don't know what the future holds but I have feelings for that club."

Lazio are also reportedly keen on Hagi and have been linked with a move on several occasions over the past few months, although that may now change after Simone Inzaghi left to replace Antonio Conte and Inter.
