Ianis Hagi issues Rangers focus promise as youngster shrugs off emotional play-off prospect

Rangers star Ianis Hagi assures his focus is entirely on Thursday's clash with Willem II, despite the prospect of an emotional tie in the Europa League play-off round.

Despite the prospect of a game against dad Gheorge’s former club Galatasaray in the next round, the 21-year-old is refusing to consider an emotional play-off tie.

The playmaker - who announced himself on the European stage with a double against Braga last season - was born in Istanbul but said: “We have to win this game and do our job and then another game at the weekend so I don’t really think about what could happen in the next round.

“As a young player you want to play on the highest level this season so that’s my aim but I understand how big it is for Rangers to play in the group stage and I’m here not for my dreams and what I want but for the club.

“European matches are really big and I had the opportunity to see how big they are at Ibrox and obviously I want to feel the same, if not even better, again this season.

“My numbers have been much better in the last couple of games and that has built up confidence and I just want to continue that and do even better.

“European games are obviously much more open and the opposition team try to play more with the ball.

"There is more space but every game is different and you have to try and do what our coaches tell us and respect that.”
