Ianis Hagi in passionate Rangers plea to Steven Gerrard as star clings to his Olympic dream

Ianis Hagi will plead with Steven Gerrard to allow him to fulfil his Olympic dream with Romania.

The playmaker has been named in his national squad for the summer tournament in Japan - the first time in 57 years they have qualified.

But the tournament will clash with Rangers' Champions League qualifiers and clubs are under no obligation from FIFA to allow their players to go.

The Premiership champions along with Cagliari. Slavia Prague and Inter Milan have informed the Romanians they won't release Hagi, Razvan Marin, Nicolae Stanciu and Ionut Radu.

But the 22-year-old insisted he hasn't had a definitive answer from Rangers yet and isn't giving up hope after admitting he is desperate to play his part in Tokyo.

He said: "I want to play at a tournament like the Olympics. It's something unique. I probably won't get a chance like this any other time in your career.

"It's clear I want to go

"Unfortunately, we, the players, are in a situation where it does not depend on ourselves.

"Personally, I have made it very clear to the club I want to play at the Olympics, but I don't yet have a clear answer from Rangers."

Rangers are already without fellow attacking players for the opening qualifiers after the suspensions of Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe.
