Ianis Hagi criticism blasted by Rangers star's fed-up dad as Gheorghe launches impassioned defence

Gheorghe Hagi has blasted pundits in Romania for continuing to compare him with his son.

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona superstar is fed up with constant talk on whether Ianis Hagi is as good as his dad, or if he could eventually be.

Hagi Snr attacted criticism for predicting his son to one day be as good as Zinedine Zidane last week.

The Rangers star was also criticised for his performances for Romania, after they were eliminated from the Euro 2020 semi-finals in the play-off in Iceland.

Hagi was also criticised for his comments following the defeat to Iceland where he appeared to criticise Romania boss Mirel Radoi.

But Hagi senior insisted he didn't mean to make the comparison in a football sense and has demanded critics lay off his son.

He said: "What I said was that he didn't look like me, he looks more like Zidane. I didn't mean he played like him. It was taken the wrong way.

"Ianis has different legs than me, a different style, he is taller and more handsome than me. He speaks English, I don't. He is intelligent, I'm not. He has a personality, I don't.

"We need to stop comparing him with other players. It's not fair on him. He is a young man who has a chance of a future in the game.

"Let's wait until he is 35 years old and then we can compare careers."
