Ianis Hagi could miss Rangers Champions League qualifiers as he issues Ibrox plea

Rangers could be without Ianis Hagi for their Champions League qualifiers if the creative midfielder gets his way.

The 22-year-old is desperate to play for Romania at the Olympics in Tokyo but clubs are under no obligation to release players for a non-FIFA tournament.

Cagliari, Slavia Prague and Inter have all said they won't let their players travel, and Rangers are set to keep Hagi in Scotland.

But the playmaker says he hasn't had a definitive answer from Steven Gerrard and the club as he pleaded for the chance to represent his country in a first Olympics in 57 years.

Hagi said: "I want to play at a tournament like the Olympics. It's something unique. I probably won't get a chance like this any other time in your career.

"It's clear I want to go.

"Unfortunately, we, the players, are in a situation where it does not depend on ourselves.

"Personally, I have made it very clear to the club I want to play at the Olympics, but I don't yet have a clear answer from Rangers."

Rangers are already without fellow attacking players for the opening qualifiers after the suspensions of Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe.
