Ianis Hagi backed for Rangers stardom as Galatasaray boss claims son can be even better than Gheorghe

Fatih Terim hopes Ianis Hagi can be even BETTER than his famous father as he prepares to face the youngster with Galatasaray.

The Turkish giants face Rangers in a one-off Europa League playoff on Thursday and it'll be an emotional occasion for Hagi.

The youngster was born in Istanbul and father Gheorghe is a Galatasaray legend.

He's considered to be the greatest player Romania has ever produced and helped Gala to win the UEFA Cup and four Turkish titles.

Terim, now in this fourth spell on the Galatasaray bench, was in charge for all of those triumphs and Hagi was the unquestioned star of the team.

But the veteran coach hopes his son can be even better, admitting he's been impressed with the 21-year-old's ability.

Terim said: "I worked with Gica (Hagi Sr) for four years. We had great performances together.

"His son was born in Turkey and he is a very promising young man. I don't know if he will be as good as his father, but I hope he will be.

"I really hope he is better, I'm sure his father wants that too. But there is no doubt Ianis is a good player with great potential for improvement."

Ianis was born in Turkey while his father was playing for Galatasaray and couldn't have represented the nation at international level.

He opted to play for Romania instead, but grew up dreaming of playing for the Turkish giants.

Fans have long hoped he'd inherit his father's No.10 shirt but Hagi will be looking to eliminate Galatasaray on Thursday.
