Ianis Hagi and the diplomatic scramble Rangers could benefit from as Romania chief provides update on star

Romanian FA technical director Mihai Stoichita has revealed the diplomatic intervention that got Ianis Hagi out of North Macedonia.

And it's a scramble Rangers could benefit from ahead of their Europa League opener against Lyon next Thursday.

Hagi tested positive for Covid-19 while in North Macedonia for his country's World Cup qualifier in Skopje this week.

The Ibrox star could have faced a gruelling 20-day isolation period because he showed symptoms after complaining of a headache.

But the Romanian FA have revealed how they used diplomatic channels to get Hagi out of the country and back to his homeland.

His reduced isolation period would mean he is in contention to return when Steven Gerrard 's side kick off their group stage campaign against the Ligue 1 giants.

Stoichita said: "First of all, a man's health was our priority above all else.

"So we arranged a plane for Ianis to fly home on.

"This only happened because of the direct request of our football federation and the kindness and helpfulness of the Macedonian officials.

"And all of this was because of the providential intervention of the Romanian Embassy in North Macedonia.

"He was immediately taken and isolated after landing at the airport. He had no serious symptoms, we were glad to report.

"Also, when it comes to vaccination, everyone has a choice. Our federation cannot force a player to be vaccinated or not."
