Ian Wright slams 'shameful' Arsenal decision as UEFA make Europa League threat

Here are your Arsenal morning headlines for Tuesday, April 20.

Wright slams Arsenal

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has slammed Arsenal over their decision to become one of the founding members of the Super League.

“I literally can’t believe it when I saw Arsenal’s name come up on the screen as one of the teams,” he has said on social media.

“This is the same Arsenal that only a couple of weeks ago was commended for the tribute to David Rocastle.

“God, the man would be turning in his grave knowing what is going on now. Is this how far we have fallen?

“That we are getting into competitions because we are not good enough to get into them, so at the detriment of the English game we are getting the seat to the table we have no right to be at.”

“It is shameful,” added Wright.

“If I am a player now I am worried that if I play in this competition I can’t play in the Euros, the World Cup. They are saying the teams in the semi-finals now may get disqualified because of all of this.

“Are we supposed to play against these great teams on a weekly basis, I played against AC Milan twice in my career and it is something I will never forget."

An open letter to Stan Kroenke

Dear Stan Kroenke and KSE,

1886. That is the year Arsenal football club was founded.

One does not reach your extraordinary level of wealth without at least a basic grasp of mathematics so you probably won't need me to tell you that that was 135 years ago.

135 years of history that you are now jeopardising in pursuit of a European Super League that threatens the very existence of our club.

So far you have not even been bothered to justify your decision to the fans. Your nickname of Silent Stan has once again proven to be true and all we've heard is from the Super League's would-be president Florentino Perez who has claimed it is in the long-term interest of the game.

“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires,” he said.

Well that is clearly not true, is it?

Do you really expect us to believe that?

UEFA threat

UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin has threatened to throw Arsenal and Chelsea out of European competitions this season for endorsing the controversial new Super League proposals.

The revelation comes amid the announcement of a new Super League of which Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have signed up to be three of the 12 founding members.

The new competition, as it is proposed, would run alongside domestic leagues and would guarantee the qualification of 15 teams every year.

Almost the entirety of European football has slammed the proposals and the clubs involved, while governing bodies FIFA and UEFA have threatened action against the runaway clubs.

UEFA's Ceferin has said that any player who competes in the new Super League will not be allowed to play at European Championships or World Cups.

And the chief of European football has also said that UEFA will now consider throwing Arsenal, Chelsea and anyone else involved out of competitions 'as soon as possible'.

"We're still assessing with our legal team but we will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon we can," Ceferin said after a UEFA conference on Monday.

"My opinion is that as soon as possible they have to be banned from all our competitions and the players from all our competitions."
