Ian Wright sends transfer message to Frank Lampard and Chelsea after Newcastle defeat

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has said that Chelsea do not have a player that is able to provide the spark needed to be able to open teams up.

Despite dominating a large majority of the game, the Blues failed to get past a stubborn Newcastle team on Saturday afternoon, and were punished when Isaac Hayden steered the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga in stoppage time to snatch all three points from the game.

The result means that Chelsea are looking over their shoulder when it comes to keeping a hold on a Champions League place between now and the end of the season.

Chelsea had 70% of possession during the game and recorded 19 shots to Newcastle's seven, but were unable to break down the deep block defence of Steve Bruce's side.

Talking on Match of the Day, Wright identified an area where Lampard may wish to look at during the remaining weeks of the January transfer window.

“I felt like when we saw those clips they were continuously going into Newcastle’s strength, I thought they could have gone a little bit wider," he said.

"What is evident for everyone to see is they need that special player that can open a team like that up. They don’t have that."

The Blues have been linked with moves for Jadon Sancho, Moussa Demebele and Timo Werner.
