Ian Wright says VAR's mistake over Giovani Lo Celso tackle is 'a step in the right direction'

Ian Wright can see the benefits of VAR's mistake following controversial decision during Chelsea's win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues' victory in the London derby was somewhat overshadowed by one major incident in the second half Giovani Lo Celso appeared to stamp on Cesar Azpilicueta.

But following a lengthy VAR review, Davie Coote at Stockley Park decided against overruling Michael Oliver's original decision and play continued as usual with the Spurs midfielder avoiding even a booking.

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Frank Lampard post-match press conference

The PGMOL initially clarified the reason why Coote had opted not to send the Argentine off.

"Not a clear and obvious error and there was nowhere else for Lo Celso to put his foot," they said in a statement.

However, just minutes later, BT Sport revealed that they had been told by the PGMOL that a human error had been made and that Lo Celso should have been handed his marching orders.

Naturally, Blues head coach Frank Lampard was furious with the decision at the time and his mood hadn't improved at full-time.

"Everybody knew they made a mistake. We had the monitor and could review it. I was just waiting for the red card to be shown," he said in his post-match press conference. "Not with real pleasure, it was just a tackle that endangered the player.

"That is what VAR was brought in for, to see things that the referee didn’t see. It is just not good enough, no more to say. Saying afterwards that they made a mistake is not good enough, because they had a couple of minutes to get it right, they probably needed one minute to get it right."

Whilst VAR has come in for criticism from many in the football world, Wright is happy that the PGMOL owned up to their mistake and thinks it sets a good trend for the future.

"I think that what we have to look at it they have put their hands up and rightly admitted it," Wright said on Match of the Day. "It doesn't help people and it doesn't help Lampard because that’s what VAR is for but it's a step forward when they are coming out and saying 'we got that one wrong'.

"It's a step in the right direction."

Martin Keown was less sympathetic as he insisted Lo Celso should have been sent off.

"He’s virtually signed his leg, almost best wishes. He should have been off and Michael Oliver should be embarrassed about that," the former Arsenal defender said.

"He should have been asked to go to the monitor, for foul play now that’s what they’re supposed to do, and you can see why Frank is incensed because it made it a difficult end to the match, down to 10 men and it’s completely over, that match."
