Ian Wright says Unai Emery's not strong enough to make captaincy decision at Arsenal

Ian Wright has questioned whether Unai Emery is strong enough to make a big call and hand the Arsenal captaincy to someone like Matteo Guendouzi.

Emery introduced a pool system when he arrived in north London, and selected five players to rotate wearing the armband for the Gunners.

Following the exits of three of them in the summer: Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech and Aaron Ramsey, Emery decided to make Granit Xhaka the Gunners' permanent captain.

The decision has raised a few eyebrows, and Arsenal favourite Wright isn't convinced Emery has made the right call in handing the Switzerland international the armband.

He reckons the Gunners boss should have handed it to someone 'leading by example' instead - someone like Guendouzi or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

"I know they've chosen the captain but Xhaka should not be captain in front of this guy [Guendouzi] or Aubameyang, for me," Wright told Premier League Productions.

"Guendouzi is leading by example for a 20-year-old. We know Tony Adams was a captain at 20, maybe Unai's not strong enough to give somebody like Matteo Guendouzi [the captaincy].

"When you look at him here and what he's doing, that is taking the game by the scruff of the neck and driving Arsenal forward, and he's not been made captain or vice-captain. It's crazy, for me."
