Ian Wright says Manchester United already have perfect Wout Weghorst replacement on target list

Ian Wright says Harry Kane would be the perfect successor to Wout Weghorst given the new role the Dutchman is being asked to play at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag has operated Weghorst as a deeper-lying No.10 to link up play ahead of him with Marcus Rashford operating as the No.9. The January loanee - who has scored once in 10 outings - has been praised for his selfless contributions to the team.

The 30-year-old’s pressing has been noted by onlookers while his hold-up play for on-runners has brought praise from his manager. It’s a role Kane often plays at Tottenham.

The England captain - who is now Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer - has become an expert passer of the ball as well as a deadly goal-getter.

MEN Sport understands Kane is on Ten Hag’s radar ahead of an expected pursuit of a marquee striker with Serie A top scorer Victor Osimhen also making the cut. Mohammed Kudus of Ajax and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos are also of interest.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wright Show, Arsenal icon Wright said Kane would be the top-pick replacement for Weghorst at the end of the season. “[Manchester United] are a Harry Kane away from really kicking on [next season],” he suggested.

”When you look at Wout Weghorst, yes I’ve been surprised with him coming off the No.9 [role] to No.10 and making things happen… but if that’s the plan then Harry Kane is the perfect person to do that.

“Marcus Rashford in that form, Alejandro Garnacho with his pace, if Antony kicks on… Everything they’ve already got going forward with a proper No.9, Man United will be back. You just feel Man United are not a million miles away [from winning the Premier League].”

Kane, 29, is in the final 18 months of his contract having never won a career trophy and admitted last month that “not much” had progressed in terms of a renewal although Antonio Conte is sure the attacker will stay at Tottenham.
