Ian Wright's verdict should convince Arsenal to seal £31.5m transfer amid Mikel Arteta interest

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has previously hailed Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, who is reportedly a target for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta's men are short of options in the centre of the park considering both Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny will be at the Africa Cup of Nations over the next few weeks.

Now, ESPN have claimed that Villa star Luiz, who is valued at £31.5million on Transfermarkt, is on the Gunners' radar as head coach Mikel Arteta is said to be keen to sign a holding midfielder in the coming months.

The 23-year-old would add some much-needed grit to Arsenal's midfield, averaging 1.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in the Premier League this season, as per Whoscored.

And the north Londoners would be getting a top-quality player, according to former England international Wright, who hailed Luiz on his own Podcast back in November 2020, after Villa had clinched a 3-0 win against Arteta's side.

“The movement Villa have got upfront and with their natural swag now,” Wright said. “They have got defenders and midfielders who are ready [to go the next level].

“Someone like Douglas Luiz he is ready to be one of the best midfield players in the Premier League. He is so underrated, at the minute.

“They blasted us. We had no chance. It was men against boys.”

Arsenal could also be set to offload a midfielder this month as football.london understands that they are in talks with AS Roma over a potential love move for Hale End graduate Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Maitland-Niles has struggled for game time this season, starting just two Premier League matches this term.
