Ian Wright's role in Arsenal handing Dennis Bergkamp's son a trial at club

Arsenal icon Ian Wright provided an assist for his former strike partner Denis Bergkamp long after retiring, the Dutchman has revealed.

Bergkamp's son, Mitchel Denis Bergkamp, is currently forming his own career in the game and joined Watford earlier this year.

The 22-year-old plays as a central attacking midfielder, and joined the Hornets after leaving Almere City last summer.

Prior to that move, however, he had a trial at Arsenal, the club his father played more than 400 games for.

And the former Gunners striker revealed that Wright had a big part to play in convincing the youngster to try and continue his career in England.

Speaking to The Athletic, Bergkamp explained that his former team-mate came to visit him in Holland and asked him about his son's development.

“It all started with Ian Wright coming here (in 2019)," he said.

“He basically said, ‘Why is Mitchel not trying in England? Why is he not trying it at Arsenal?’

"It got the ball rolling and in the end, there was a trial (at Arsenal) planned last season."

Despite young Berkgamp impressing during his trial at the club, he wasn't offered a place at the club's academy.

The youngster was apparently forced to remain in Holland and train with his father as he waited for permission to travel to London.

And when the time came for his trial, Arsenal apparently decided he was simply slightly too old to be signed up.

“Only his age stopped Arsenal from continuing with the process, because he did well there in the training sessions,” Bergkamp continued.

“It was important to see if he could cope with a higher level, we already knew that (he would be able to) in the family.”
