Ian Wright's brilliant Newcastle United verdict on Match of the Day, as he has his say on NUFC takeover

Ian Wright has hailed Rafa Benitez for “a miracle” as Newcastle secured Premier League safety for another season.

United moved onto 38 points with a fine 1-0 win at Leicester , courtesy of Ayoze Perez’s excellent header. And it means that with Cardiff losing to Burnley on Saturday, United can play the final few fixtures of the season with the freedom of knowing they’re guaranteed top flight football in 2019/20.

But Newcastle fans will be uneasy about the fact Benitez’s contract is yet to be signed – and Wright says the United manager “needs some help”.

Speaking on Match of the Day last night, Wright also said Newcastle is a £300million “bargain” for an investor.

“(Ayoze) Perez was the match winner but what Rafa has done with this team is just a miracle really. Perez, for me, I watched him against Everton and he was magnificent that day. He is a real nuisance,” Wright said on MOTD.

“It was brilliant play by Matt Ritchie in the build-up but that run across the near post and that header is brilliant. You have to hand it to Rafa and what he has done for that club when you consider the lack of investment and the lack of help he has had. To get this team another season in the Premier League, it is a miracle.”

Wright then turned his attention to Mike Ashley. “ Mike Ashley open to end of season sale of Newcastle United, and why club wasn't sold in January . I think it is a bargain for someone. With the players (Rafa) has got, people saying it is a Championship side and they have stayed up comfortably.

“The man needs some help. Unbelievable. The amount of fans they brought to Leicester. Amazing Newcastle.”
