Ian Wright on the ultimate compliment he was paid during his Arsenal days

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has revealed that Paul Merson paid him the biggest compliment during his playing career.

The Gunners striker is the club's second-highest goalscorer with 185 strikes to his name.

Only Thierry Henry has scored more than Wright, explaining why he is so highly thought of.

Wright was perceived as one of the deadliest strikers around, with his ruthless ice-cold finishing his main weapon.

It helped Arsenal secure one Premier League title and Two FA Cup trophies during his time in north London.

One of those cup triumphs was against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1993 final and Wright explained how his teammate Merson paid him one the biggest compliments on that day.

"People talk to you now and they say 'when you went through I thought it was a goal', he told The Art of Finishing podcats.

"I never thought like that but I suppose the defenders would.

"Merse had his hands up in the cup final. He would always have his hands up celebrating when I was running through on goal. That's the biggest compliment you can get.

"It was the replay of the FA Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday, I remember when Alan Smith put me through, all I was thinking was 'just keep this out your feet'.

"I knew Chris Woods was going to continuously edge out, I've seen him doing it before, just edge out, edge out.

"I knew, as long as the ball wasn't travelling too fast I could get my foot under it to dink it over him.

"As soon as the ball goes through from Alan Smith, Merse has already put his arms in the air, you can't get any bigger compliment than that."
