Ian Wright names the one West Ham player David Moyes should have played vs Manchester United

Former West Ham striker Ian Wright was left staggered by David Moyes' negative tactics and team selection against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Hammers fell to a 1-0 defeat after an unfortunate Craig Dawson own goal, but the scoreline was kind on West Ham thanks to a fine Lukasz Fabianski performance and Mason Greenwood twice hitting the post.

According to Wyscout Moyes' team had just four shots during the match with Dean Henderson in the Manchester United goal not required to make a single save throughout the match.

And it was this lack of attacking intent that has riled Wright up.

David Moyes press conference after Manchester United 1-0 West Ham

“He went so negative the other day, and I know he is missing Jesse Lingard, but he still had [Manuel] Lanzini and [Said] Benrahma,” he said on Wrighty's House podcast.

“If you’re going to play Soucek and Rice you can easily fit in a Michail Antonio and make it a triangle. No disrespect to Mark Noble. You could still bring on a Lanzini. I would have just gone very attacking against United because they always start so slowly.

“You should have gone more positive to try and beat Manchester United and then in the end he brought on Lanzini and Benrahma anyway. Just let the guys off the leash, bro.”

Wright's criticism of Moyes did not end there with the pundit claiming that the West Ham players would have been annoyed with the way their manager decided they should play:

“I guarantee you after this game, you could feel it, you could see the players walking off, you could tell when the players are not happy with the system that they’re meant to play. You could see it in their body language," Wright said.

"You could see it in Michail Antonio, all of sudden he’s playing wide on the right having to stop Luke Shaw. What for?

“He’s having one of those seasons there’s not really a defender in the league who likes playing against him. So why would you take him out of the firing line when he’s playing against Lindelof and Maguire? They can’t stop him once he gets into his flow.”

West Ham may have gone down to their third defeat this season to Manchester United but not all is lost for the Hammers, far from it.

Despite this loss Moyes' team are still just three points off Chelsea in fourth place and have a game in hand on their London rivals, plus a home match on April 24 against Thomas Tuchel's side.

The clash with Chelsea is a long way off with West Ham facing Arsenal this coming weekend before a difficult trip to Molineux to take on Wolves and a tough home fixture against third-placed Leicester.

The manager's team selection against Arsenal will be greatly anticipated to see if he moves away from the negative outlook that took hold of him at Old Trafford.
