Ian Wright makes Pierre-Emerick Aubemyang claim as Arsenal continue transfer business

Ian Wright has insisted signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to a new contract would be Arsenal's best transfer business this summer.

Mikel Arteta reiterated after the Community Shield that he still holds great confidence Aubameyang will pen a new deal after yet another impressive display at Wembley.

With less than 12 months remaining on his current deal, Arsenal fans remain nervous that their club captain and star player could walk away for free.

In the transfer market, the Gunners confirmed the addition of Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes on Monday for a fee of around £27million.

Arsenal are also close to re-signing Dani Ceballos on another season-long loan from Real Madrid, whilst Mikel Arteta still holds an interest in Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey.

Neither Aouar nor Partey will arrive in north London until players are sold, however, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira all likely to be on the market.

However, Arsenal legend Wright believes that regardless of what business the club do, a new deal for top-scorer Aubameyang would be the best signing they could make.

“To be honest, I think he will be the most significant signing Mikel can make,” Wright told Good Morning Britain.

“We do need to make that happen, simply because of what he brings to that team. When you look at the chances created for Arsenal, they were 16th in the league and he still scored the amount of goals he scored.

“So if you can imagine, we can start creating more with the players we have signed – the Willians and people like that – then he is going to score more goals. It is imperative that he signs.”
