Arsenal legend Ian Wright has compared the turmoil unfolding at Manchester United to Mike Ashley's tenure as Newcastle United owner.
The Red Devils have made their worst start to a league season in 101 years after their defeat against Brighton was compounded by a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Brentford.
The Glazers have been a divisive figure at Old Trafford from the moment they completed their takeover of Man United in May 2005. Many supporters attend matches sporting the colours of the club's predecessor Newton Heath, which later became Manchester United in 1902.
A breakaway club called FC United of Manchester was also founded in 2005 as another form of protest towards the takeover. The Swiss Ramble revealed in a Twitter thread on Tuesday that Man United have now paid a staggering £743m in interest since the takeover in 2005.
They also paid £517m in interest payments between 2010 and 2021 with Arsenal paying the second most at £174m. Wright likened the situation to Newcastle's period under Mike Ashley and believes that selling the club, as the Magpies did last year, is the type of measures required to end Man United's demise.
"To watch Man United like that know isn't fun for me," Wright admitted on his Wrighty's House podcast. "I don't know how many years this is going to take. From the fans point of view who've been protesting from day one, obviously we've seen more and more money being taken out and they've been saying that for time.
"The saddest thing is that Man United are still able to generate [big] money, which is why they can spend a billion quid on players. It just shows when you get the wrong people running a football club.
"Someone has got to buy that club and let them do their thing now. It's got to a place now for Man United fans where this is wrong. It's like Newcastle, what he [Mike Ashley] was doing at Newcastle to the fans was wrong. What the Glazers are doing to that football is wrong."
