Ian Wright makes Arsenal transfer claim about Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek

Ian Wright has suggested Donny van de Beek would have been a more appropriate signing for Arsenal than Manchester United.

The Dutch midfielder is Ed Woodward's only summer signing to date, having joined from Ajax earlier in the window. Van de Beek's arrival prompted questions as to how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will fit him into the same team as Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

The 23-year-old scored on his Premier League debut off the bench against Crystal Palace, after Scott McTominay had started as United's holding midfielder along with Fernandes and Pogba.

Van de Beek did line up in United's 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town but in an attacking midfield role, prompting further questions over where he would fit in tactically.

"Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken," Wright said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

"When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position. So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

"Because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play. So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yes take him, but you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.

"Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player, but is he what they need right now?"
