Ian Wright hits nail on head with Mesut Ozil comment after he's subbed off by Unai Emery

Ian Wright has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil for his performance in Arsenal's defeat by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The German was the Gunners' best player in what was only his third appearance of the season in all competitions under Unai Emery.

Ozil assisted two of the goals in the 5-5 draw in regulation time and was instrumenting in setting up Gabriel Martinelli to net his second.

But despite his heroics, Ozil was hooked by Emery midway through the second half and replaced by Matteo Guendouzi.

Arsenal favourite Wright took to Twitter to comment on the German's performance.

He wrote: "Finding space. Total composure in the final third. Clear chances being created. So much of what we need! Fantastic tonight Mes."

Wright spoke out about Ozil ahead of the match, hitting out at Emery for not playing the World Cup winner more often.

When the former Gunners striker was asked on The Kelly and Wrighty Show who will outlive the other at the Emirates, he replied: "Well hopefully Ozil.

"He's already said he doesn't want to leave. For me, hopefully it's Ozil."

Looking back on the Europa League win over Vitoria, in which Ozil was left out entirely, Wright added: "I'm very disappointed to see that [Ozil not in the squad] because I don't think that Arsenal, when you look at Arsenal's creative stats, they're not up there.

"They're actually not creating as much and they're conceding more shots on target. So that says to me you need somebody who's creative to be playing there.

"Mesut Ozil is that guy, I don't know what's going on with him and Unai Emery, but for me I think this could be the problem for Unai in the end if Arsenal continue to do what they're doing.

"They're waiting for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang or Pepe, like the other day, to save them. The fact is he should be playing."
