Ian Wright admits he is ‘worried’ about Timo Werner’s goalscoring run after the German striker went goalless once again for Chelsea against Everton.
The 25-year-old started Monday night’s Premier League encounter against the Toffees but was guilty of missing several gilt-edged opportunities in the 2-0 victory for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Werner had two one-on-one opportunities saved by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the second half before being taken off by Tuchel for Christian Pulisic late on to leave the German forward with just five goals in 27 league appearances.
Wright believes that Werner, who scored 34 times last season for RB Leipzig, is rushing his finishing and is wasting too many opportunities created by his side.
The former Arsenal striker told Premier League Productions on Monday: “Unfortunately for him Timo Werner missed another couple of chances. Converting those chances only gives confidence to the team and probably him as well.
“He just seems to be snatching chances that if he could take them it would then give Chelsea the confidence that they are playing well from back to front and then they are finishing off they could really start to cause people problems.
“The fact is he’ll probably get the time because of the outlay on him and what they’ve invested in him. We know he’s capable of scoring - he did it in the Bundesliga and at international level - but for some reason it’s not quite clicking and gelling as well as we thought he would do at Chelsea right now.
“It’s not like they’re not making chances. That would be the worry for me.”
Werner was also criticised by Tuchel during the Stamford Bridge encounter on Monday as a pitchside microphone picked up the Chelsea head coach complaining about the striker’s positioning.
Tuchel was heard saying: “Timo, how long are you staying on the left? You’re playing on the right! The last 15 mins you’ve only been on the left! Don’t you understand?”
Thankfully for Chelsea, Kai Havertz was in form for the Blues on Monday night as the forward, who joined the west Londoners along with Werner at the start of the season, played a role in both of his side’s goals in Monday’s win.
Havertz’s first-half strike deflected off Ben Godfrey and past Pickford to open the scoring for Chelsea before the 21-year-old was tripped by the Toffees goalkeeper to win a penalty after half-time which Jorginho converted to seal the points.
