Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed to a new contract.
The Gunners captain is now into the final year of his deal at the Emirates Stadium and despite positive noises coming out of the club regarding an extension, there's yet to be an official announcement.
Manager Mikel Arteta has said he is "really optimistic" that the club and the player will soon come to an agreement to extend his stay in north London.
"I can say I’m even more confident that at the end of last season. I’m really optimistic," he said, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the opening Premier League game against Fulham.
"I think they [Arsenal fans] can be pretty relaxed."
But for Wright, he wants confirmation as soon as possible.
In fact, he thinks Aubameyang signing a new deal will be the best piece of business his former club does this summer and that's despite links to Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.
"He will be their best signing," Wright said on Match of the Day. "I’m going to see papa Aubameyang tomorrow, they have to sign, simple as that, and I’m not going to leave.
"We have to sign that guy."
Wright was speaking after Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage.
Aubameyang opened his account for the new Premier League season with the third goal of the game as he expertly curled an effort into the top corner after being picked out by debutant Willian.
And it would appear that Wright will soon get his wish.
As reported by football.london, it is understood that Aubameyang has agreed to extend his stay with the club and that the Gunners are edging closer to official confirmation of a three-year extension, as per reports from The Athletic, which will serve as a major boost to Arteta and the squad as a whole.
Since signing for Arsenal in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang has netted 72 goals in 111 games for the club, including 22 goals in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons, despite playing predominantly off the left-wing.
