Ian Wright hails Rob Holding for reporting alleged racist abuse of Arsenal pair against Leeds

Ian Wright has praised Rob Holding for reporting an alleged racial slur aimed at Nicolas Pepe and Nuno Tavares during Arsenal's 4-1 win over Leeds United.

The incident happened just after half hour mark when the substitutes were warming up in front of the home supporters.

Rob Holding is understood to have notified fourth official John Brook who went on to inform referee Andre Mariner, causing a stoppage in play while the stadium manager was also told of the incident.

When speaking after the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that the allegation was of racist abuse by a single Leeds fan towards his players.

"Yes unfortunately I can confirm that," said the Spaniard in his post match press conference. "It was reported to the stadium manager then the authorities will deal with that.

"The players that were sitting on the bench," the 39-year-old said. "One of those heard those comments."

At the time of Arteta's press conference, it was unclear as to which Arsenal players had been targeted, but it has since been revealed that Pepe and Tavares were subject of the vile abuse.

West Yorkshire Police have since arrested one person after the match in relation to the incident, while Leeds had confirmed an arrest had been made and that the matter was being investigated.

"Leeds United can confirm that an investigation into claims of racism during the first half of our game with Arsenal are underway, and that one arrest has been made in connection to the allegation,’ a statement read.

"Racism will not be tolerated at Leeds United and any supporter found to be using racist language will be subject to a life time ban for all Leeds United games."

But for Wright, the real hero of the matter is Holding as he praised the Arsenal defender for speaking up for his teammates.

"You have to applaud people like Rob Holding," Wright told Premier League Productions. "When you are being racially abused it’s very difficult to get up and do that as a black person without people coming down and piling on and saying 'here he goes, here he goes'.

"So for Rob Holding to get up and do that for his teammates is something for me, being in a dressing room and knowing what that’s like wanting that kind of help, that is fantastic.

"What should happen now is he should be found, we should be able to find him because it’s there for everyone to see and he should be prosecuted and banned."
