Ian Wright gives Dele Alli verdict as Tottenham midfielder ends goalscoring drought

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has praised Dele Alli after his "brilliant performance" in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday.

The midfielder scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot but also put in a stellar performance all-round.

Alli has had a difficult couple of years in north London after falling out of favour under former Spurs boss, Jose Mourinho, and has looked a shadow of his former-self after setting such high-standards during Mauricio Pochettino's reign.

However, if one thing's clear, it's that he is still capable at the highest level as he proved at Molineux.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Wright said: “Dele seemed to be in the wilderness, something happened to him under Mourinho. And we know what Dele is capable of. I think we saw a lot of it in the game today.

“I thought he was fantastic in the way he plays. He gets himself forward. I just liked the way he looks like he’s back to it now.

“It was brilliant, it was a brilliant performance from him.”

Positively, Alli already looks like he is fulfilling a promise made to Spurs fans at the end of his disappointing 2020/21 campaign.

In an honest self-reflection expressed on Twitter in May, the 25-year-old stated how determined he is to get back to the level he knows he can play at.

“It goes without saying that this season has been the most difficult in my career so far,” he said. “There have been some incredibly low moments and tough challenges I’ve had to face but I’m grateful to always have the opportunity to do what I love.”

“This season has taught me I can’t take anything for granted and I’m more determined than ever to come back fitter and stronger.”

It’s great to see Alli doing well again, and Tottenham fans will be hoping his form continues long into the season.
