Ian Wright explains why he has sympathy for Granit Xhaka following Arsenal captain's outburst

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has admitted he does have some sympathy for Grant Xhaka after being booed off by his own supporters on Sunday.

The Gunners captain made all the headlines during their 2-2 with Crystal Palace, where they dropped more points in the race for the top four despite holding a two-goal lead.

Xhaka sparked outrage when he told fans to ‘f**k off’, cupped his hands to his ears and stripped off his shirt as he headed straight down the tunnel after being substituted during his side's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

That sparked mass outrage amongst the club's supporters, who have demanded the Swiss international is stripped of the armband by Unai Emery.

However, club legend Wright has admitted he has some sympathy for Xhaka's situation but refused to condemn the way he responded to the fans booing him.

"Arsenal haven't played a decent game of football, in respect of the fans being happy, for a long time," Wright told BBC Radio 5Live Monday Night Club.

"He may be somebody and again the boss picks him continually and that is something that will frustrate them.

"Yesterday, I think it all culminated in him coming off and you know what, to a certain extent when you look at it 24 hours later, I feel for him for what he's going through personally. Him and his pregnant wife and all the abuse they've had to take.

Unai Emery says Granit Xhaka was wrong to swear at fans

"I'm not trying to make him the victim here because I still don't think the way he came off was the way a captain should but we've still got to understand what it's like to be a footballer in the 20th century."
