Ian Wright delivers verdict on Willian's Arsenal transfer

There were more than a few questioning looks when Willian's transfer to Arsenal was completed.

No one was doubting the frontman's ability, following a fine season at Chelsea, but at 32 years of age the three-year contract he was given did raise a few eyebrows.

The main reason for leaving Chelsea appeared to be that the Blues were reluctant to offer him anymore than a new two-year deal. The Gunners were keen to tie up a deal, however, with other teams interested and did not have any issue with giving him three years.

And Arsenal legend Ian Wright has delivered his verdict on the transfer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: "There's people talking about Willian, his age and his contract, but you only need to listen to Mikel [Arteta] and how Mikel speaks about a player like Willian.

Willian swaps Chelsea for London rivals Arsenal

"It's short-term but when you look at where we are and the financial constraints, I think that it is a magnificent signing.

"When you look at someone of his calibre, last season he was execllent, he didn't play as often as he'd like but every time he played he brings something, creates something.

"At this stage of his career and the fact he can play in different positions, I feel it's a brilliant deal for us.

"Of course it's a long time for a player of his age to get in respect of his contract, you can question that, but he can be a part of creating enough, because our midfield didn't create anywhere near enough last season.

"He can create chances and score goals. He's a winner and getting a player like Willian for our young players has got to be good.

"I look at it from a playing point of view and it's win win. I'm delighted he's there and fingers crossed everything can work out for him."
