Ian Wright delivers verdict on Nicolas Pepe as Arsenal dealt 'ridiculous' penalty decision

Ian Wright says that Nicolas Pepe has to do more to help his teammates after the defeat against Aston Villa, and that Arsenal were on the wrong end of a "ridiculous" penalty decision at Villa Park.

The Gunners fell to a 1-0 defeat against Dean Smith's side, with a deflected Ollie Watkins strike making the difference in the end.

It was the second defeat in a week for Mikel Arteta's team following the loss against Wolves at Molineux in midweek, and Wright says that the match against Villa was a disappointment due to the attack not quite functioning fully.

"They started so well against Wolves," Wright said on Match of the Day. "It didn’t end up how they would have liked to against Wolves.

"I just thought some of the movement and forward play wasn’t very good. Pepe has to do more for Emile Smith-Rowe, he’s the No 10 and he needs an option. Villa were very organised.

"[Alexandre] Lacazette doesn’t need to go wide as he’s got [Bukayo] Saka and [Hector] Bellerin there. Once it got into the final third, like the manager said, they didn’t really execute and the final ball wasn’t really too much of a threat, which was a disappointment.

"There wasn’t enough threat in the box. If Lacazette was coming deep, they needed someone to get in there. Maybe I’m nit-picking but those things are things I probably would have done myself."

Arsenal were denied a penalty when Lacazette was adjudged to have fouled Emi Martinez while a corner was taken.

However, on closer inspection it appeared as if the former Gunners keeper was grabbing the striker's shirt, pulling him to the ground instead.

VAR chose not to bring the incident to referee Chris Kavanagh's attention, and Wright says it was the wrong decision.

"It was a penalty," Wright added. "The goalkeeper grabbed hold of him and he pulled him over.

"He’s done what they all do, as you’re going to get a foul if you touch the goalkeeper. For me, it’s ridiculous.

"Of course Dean Smith didn’t see it, he’s got the Arsene Wenger glasses on."
