Ian Wright delivers Olivier Giroud verdict that Chelsea fans will love

Ian Wright believes Olivier Giroud is a “quality player” and that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is lucky to have him.

Giroud made it five goals in his last six starts for the Blues with a header right on the stroke of half-time to hand Chelsea all three points.

After the dismal showing against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday, the win was a much-needed one for the Blues to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

And Wright, speaking on Match of the Day on Wednesday night, believes Lampard is lucky to have a player like the Frenchman in his squad.

Frank Lampard on 1-0 win against Norwich: Job done

“Listening to Frank speak about him, he’s been very professional, even when Frank was using Tammy, he got on with it, worked hard, trained hard and he’s come in and he’s been needed.

“He bullied Klose again, I saw him get the same treatment from Michail Antonio and he shouldn’t be beaten like that, but Giroud has got that, he’s very experienced and anything that gets in and around the box, he uses his body very, very well.

“He’s got quality, he’s got a fantastic pass and this is what he does, get across the near post and try to clip it in. He’s a top quality player and Frank is lucky to have him.”

Giroud admitted his side were under pressure against the Canaries as they chase a place in next season’s Champions League.

He said: "We definitely needed to be patient, to play our game and to move the ball quickly against a team who play with a deep block.

“We created a lot of chances but it was important to score before half-time.

"We were very pleased with that. We should have scored more goals, we had a lot of possession, but I think the team was a bit under pressure because we needed that win."
