Ian Wright delivers his verdict on Arsenal's progress under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes that Mikel Arteta is already making progress with the club despite only being in charge for a short space of time.

The Spaniard earned his first win since taking charge of the Gunners as they beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day.

Arteta had previously overseen a draw and a defeat in his opening two games, after watching from the stands in a 0-0 draw with Everton before Christmas, but fans were left encouraged by his side’s performances in both games prior to the win against Manchester United.

And Wright has been left impressed with the way Arteta has conducted himself so far, after taking over during a difficult time for the club.

Mikel Arteta's simple response to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rumours

“He’s taken over Arsenal during one of their worst runs, home and away,” Wright told BBC Sport ahead of Arsenal’s FA Cup showdown with Leeds United.

“But I believe he should have been taken then (when Unai Emery was appointed). But since then he has had two more seasons of experience with Pep Guardiola.

“What was really interesting was his press conference. His expectation of the club, the fans, the players and what he expects of them. And the way he got it over to so many people at the club.

“Then when you look at the three games he has had you can see there is definite progress.”

Arsenal currently sit tenth in the Premier League, nine points behind London rivals Chelsea, who currently occupy fourth spot.
