Ian Wright blasts FIFA and UEFA for handling of racism after Hungary incident

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright slammed UEFA and FIFA as "incompetent" after Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were racially abused in Hungary.

The England pair were both subjected to whistles and monkey chants during England’s 4-0 away victory at the Ferenc Puskas Arena.

However, there has been anger and bemusement in the wake to the contest, as the match was allowed to go ahead despite UEFA punishing the Hungarians with a stadium ban.

European Football’s governing ordered the Hungary team to play two UEFA matches behind closed doors, after a series of racist and homophobia incidents during the European Championships.

However, the match against Gareth Southgate’s side was allowed to be performed in front of a full capacity stadium as the competition fell under FIFA’s governance and not UEFA’s.

Many figures in the footballing world have been left flummoxed and angry at this decision.

And Wright was still furious about the incident as he wasted no time in highlighting his anger ahead of England's match against Andorra.

He told ITV: "I’m surprised at FIFA investigating, it’s no different here, something we’ve perfected incident outrage.

"Racial abuse happens, people are outrage then nothing happens, no punishment. You look at the players in their work place, nothing changes.

"Look at the graphics, UEFA ban Hungry then FIFA and UEFA can’t come together. The incompetence from these two organisations is baffling."

The entire England team were also heavily booed by the crowd for taking the knee before the match in a showing of anti-racism before the contest.

FIFA recently reacted the horrible scenes by releasing their own statement on the contest.

“First and foremost, FIFA strongly rejects any form of racism and violence and has a very clear zero tolerance stance for such behaviour in football,” said the governing body.

“FIFA will take adequate actions as soon as it receives match reports concerning yesterday’s Hungary-England game.

“With regards to the previous UEFA sanction against Hungary, please note that as specified by UEFA at the time, this sanction is to be served in UEFA competitions.”

UEFA also released a statement in the wake of severe criticism of the events, explaining how they were not able to prevent the match from having a full stadium.

“These regulations do not foresee the possibility for the UEFA disciplinary bodies to ask for an extension of a sanction such as a match(es) to be played behind closed doors (or similar sanctions) to competitions organised by FIFA.”

“UEFA strongly condemns any discriminatory/racist behaviour and we will continue to lead the fight against racism and discrimination in the game.

“The alleged incidents happened in a FIFA competition and do therefore not fall under the jurisdiction of our disciplinary bodies.”

Both organisations have been under serious pressure since the events in Budapest.

He believes an awful lot more has to be done to punish such nasty incidents.
