Ian Rankin reckons Christmas has come too early for Edinburgh

Crime writer Ian Rankin has played the scrooge by suggesting Edinburgh has been to quick too celebrate Christmas.

Taking to Twitter, the Rebus author questioned if it was okay for Santa Claus to be visiting the capital so soon.

It comes the day after Last Night in Edinburgh marked the start of the festive season as the city's Christmas illuminations were switched on.

Rakin wrote: "Yup, Santa arriving in Edinburgh on...um...November 17th. This is fine."

Thousands lined the High Street for last night's show hosted by Forth 1's Arlene Stuart, where local community choirs were able to showcase their talents.

The highlight of the evening came as Santa Claus soared above the crowd on a flying sled as fireworks went off. Father Christmas himself was given the honour of turning on the city's lights.
