Ian Rankin dubs Meadows 'Pee in the Park' and slams boozy lockdown louts over rubbish carnage outside Edinburgh home

Ian Rankin has slammed lockdown louts for laying waste to a public park outside his plush Edinburgh home.

The author dubbed the Meadows park “Pee in the Park” after reports of booze-fuelled revellers relieving themselves in the bushes.

He posted a series of photos on social media showing litter strewn across the grass as punters took advantage of balmy weather and relaxed lockdown rules.

Rankin tweeted a photo of plastic bags and drinks cans left behind last night with the caption: “Thoughts with the council workers who’ll be cleaning this up in the morning.”

The Rebus writer lives in the luxury Quartermile complex overlooking the park where flats can fetch more than £1m.

Last month he shamed coronavirus-fearing neighbours who were caught on CCTV using their bare feet to hit lift buttons.

Rankin, 60, returned to Twitter this morning to praise council workers for cleaning up the Meadows mess. He posted: “Not all heroes wear capes.”

And showing a rubbish-free park after their efforts, he added: “Nice until the tribes start gathering again at lunchtime.”

Rankin was supported by neighbours who joined him on social media to vent their rage at the yobs and thank the clean-up crew.

Lee Chalmers tweeted: “And they do it at 6.30am so all the broken glass is picked up before us dog walkers are out and about. Every. Single. Day.”

Another posted: "I thought I was used to seeing the Meadows busy on a summer evening, but it's like a big nightclub tonight.”

Council bosses vowed to open public loos as soon as possible and urged park users to “hold yours in until you get home” in the meantime.
