Ian Murray claims Rangers should 'give' Nathan Patterson to Hibs or Hearts for free

Ian Murray reckons Rangers should "give" the likes of Nathan Patterson to other Scottish clubs for free to help them progress.

The Airdrie boss and former Hibs star was discussing the club handing a new deal to captain James Tavernier and what it could mean for Patterson's development.

Murray believes it was a no-brainer to tie the right-back down on fresh terms but it has raised questions over how much game-time his young understudy will enjoy when Tavernier returns from injury.

As a solution, Murray played devil's advocate and suggested the Premiership champions should consider sending him out to one of their domestic rivals at no cost.

He said on BBC Sportsound : "We're not talking for Rangers here, but if Rangers want to improve young players so much, and their fans and everybody wants to improve Scottish football, why don't they go give Patterson to Hibs?

"Give him to Hearts, St Mirren and don't ask for any money.

"If you want to progress the player and get him games, there you go.

"But they won't and I understand why."
