Ian McKinley fails to make Italy World Cup squad

Ian McKinley has failed in his bid to make Italy's World Cup squad.

The Dubliner has lost out after Conor O'Shea decided to take two out-halves - Carlo Canna and Tomasso Allan - to Japan next month. O'Shea made the final cuts to his 31-man squad after Italy's 85-15 warm-up win over Russia.

McKinley came off the bench for the Azzurri in Ireland's 29-10 warm-up victory at the Aviva Stadium eight days ago.

The 29-year-old retired from rugby in 2011 after suffering a serious eye injury while with Leinster.

But he resumed playing as a professional three years later in Italy, using specially manufactured goggles, and was capped for the first time by the Italians in November 2017.

The Bennetton no 10 featured in four Six Nations games earlier this year but all 13 of his Test caps to date have come off the bench. And, barring injury, McKinley won't be in the Far East in September.

Italy are in a pool of death alongside New Zealand and South Africa.
