Ian Maxwell defends Celtic Dubai trip as SFA chief insists positive case could have happened in Scotland

Ian Maxwell has defended Celtic's trip to Dubai and insists Christopher Jullien's positive test could have happened in Scotland.

13 Hoops players have been told to self-isolate, along with Neil Lennon and assistant John Kennedy, after coming in close contact with the defender during the warm-weather training camp in the UAE.

The Parkhead club have been under intense scrutiny for the controversial trip abroad in the middle of a pandemic.

But SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell insists Celtic adhered to their own protocols and the positive case could have occurred at home.

He told PLZ: "Celtic were over there, they’ve gone through a full review with the Government group over the weekend.

"They have reviewed all the protocols that have been in place and that type of travel is allowed.

"There are measures in place when they’re abroad in terms of the way they interacted in the hotel, they had their own protocols when they were over there.

"It’s fair to say if Celtic had been at home, they would still potentially have had a positive case, but it would have been one player that was missing.

"That is the danger of travelling abroad, there is a lot more inherent risk involved in that.

"From that perspective, I’m sure Celtic are revisiting the requirement to go and the decision they made."

Monday night's Premiership fixture between Celtic and Hibs is set to go ahead, but it has been thrown in doubt after Jack Ross' men admitted they had 'reservations' about participating.
