Ian Maxwell confirms Scottish FA stance on Gianni Infantino FIFA vote

(Image: PA)

Ian Maxwell has confirmed that the Scottish Football Association will not vote for the re-election of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president.

The Scottish FA had not joined the rest of the home nations in publicly withdrawing support for the Swiss adminstrator and that had opened them up to criticism and questions regarding their standing.

That came after Infantino suggested his plan to sell off 21 percent of FIFA's commercial and ticketing rights to a private investment company. Those plans were ditched after they received widespread condemnation and that left Infantino clinging onto his role with re-election coming up.

Now SFA chief executive Maxwell, speaking to the BBC, has come out and admitted Scotland would not be voting for Infantino and instead be standing with Uefa and their associations against the Swiss.

"The position of the SFA has been clear since the 55 national associations met," said Maxwell, speaking as he announced Sebastian Pocognoli as the new Scotland head coach.

"We have aligned ourselves with the Uefa position and 55 nations are stronger than one voice.

"Their statement since then has talked about a lack of confidence in the FIFA leadership and the Scottish FA agree completely with that decision.

"The Scottish FA will not be voting for Gianni Infantino come the re-election comes round in early 2027."

Last week, Uefa, the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf requested a review of Infantino's conduct in an open letter urging him to resign.

He has been accused of bringing the integrity of the game into disrepute.
