Ian Madigan mystery as Michael Lowry starts at out-half for Ulster

Stewart Moore makes his first start for Ulster as Michael Lowry is named as starting out-half for the Guinness PRO14 opener against Benetton at Kingspan Stadium tomorrow night (8.15pm).

Lowry performed well as a makeshift No.10 after Billy Burns suffered a calf injury in the Champions Cup loss to Toulouse almost a fortnight ago.

With Ian Madigan not named in the squad, the young full-back slotted impressively into the playmaker role.

Despite not being named in the injury list released by Ulster earlier in the week, Madigan is not involved for the Benetton game.

And, with Burns set to be sidelined for a number of weeks, Lowry is called upon to play the out-half role again.

Jacob Stockdale reverts to full-back in place of Lowry, and after he was given a torrid time on the wing by Cheslin Kolbe in Toulouse. The Ireland star is joined by Rob Lyttle and Craig Gilroy in the back three.

Jack McGrath and Marty Moore will pack down either side of Rob Herring in the front row, and Sam Carter will partner captain Iain Henderson at lock.  Matthew Rea, Sean Reidy and Marcell Coetzee make up the back row unit.

Back-row and Academy Player of the Year, David McCann, could make his senior debut for the province off the bench, while prop Gareth Milasinovich is also set to earn his first cap following his return from a knee injury sustained shortly after joining the club last summer.

Ulster : Stockdale, Gilroy, Hume, S Moore, Lyttle, Lowry, Cooney; McGrath, Herring, M Moore, Carter, Henderson (capt), Rea, Reidy, Coetzee.

Replacements : McBurney, O'Sullivan, Milasinovich, O'Connor, McCann, Mathewson, Johnston, Ludik.
