Line Of Duty review: Action overload on series opener even better than Bodyguard

If you were foolish or unfortunate enough to have missed Sunday night's series five opener, allow me to fill you in.

Following a staged RTC, ED-905 was hijacked by an armed UCG containing a UCO.

During the hijack three AFOs were killed and a fourth left for dead.

This led to an investigation by AC-12, which immediately triggered a MOPI flag warning.

If you were coming to Line of Duty for the first time thanks to the BBC’s “From The Makers Of Bodyguard” trailers, you might have got a little lost in acronym overload. Luckily, you will have still discovered that LOD is the BDOT (Best Drama On Telly).

Bodyguard wishes it was this good. In fact, every TV show wishes it was this good.

Martin Compston's pal jokes that Line Of Duty star 'stole his career'

Nothing puts you on the edge of your seat like the noise of that AC-12 tape machine whirring into gear.

And nothing keeps you there like watching a regular character having her throat slashed.

Jed Mercurio has also given us two extra reasons to tune in every Sunday night for the next month.

5 Line Of Duty questions that need solving as Balaclava Man returns

One, he’s written a part for Stephen Graham, who looks like giving series four’s star performer Thandie Newton a run for her money.

Two, he’s playing with every LOD fan’s greatest fear: That our hero Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) might be a wrong'un himself.

It’s bad enough having to watch lonely divorcee Ted go the full Alan Partridge in the Edge Park Hotel. (I really hope he’s got his big plate for the £5.75 breakfast.)

I don’t how I would cope if I had to witness him being interrogated by an officer at least one rank senior.
