Ian Holloway's potentially awkward Motherwell reunion with Kevin Van Veen after 'ginger d***' jibe

Ian Holloway cold be set for an awkward reunion with Kevin Van Veen at Motherwell after calling him a “ginger d***” during his Grimsby Town days.

The Steelmen are set to interview the former QPR and Blackpool boss as they try and land a longer-term replacement for Stevie Hammell after the former ‘Well defender was sacked at the weekend. Stuart Kettlewell has taken temporary charge and got off to a winning starts on Wednesday night, beating St Mirren 2-1 at Fir Park. The Fir Park board will hold discussions with candidates - understood to include former Hibs and Dundee United Jack Ross - ahead of Sunday's Premiership clash at home to Hearts.

If Holloway does get the nod, then he may have to clear the air with Dutch striker Van Veen, who came in for some stick while Holloway was in charge at Grimsby. At a supporters function, Holloway was addressing fans in one of the club suites and talking about them taking their vengeance on opposition players who had celebrated in front of them.

Van Veen played for Lincolnshire rivals Scunthorpe United at the time, and had irked Holloway with his provocative celebration in front of the Mariners’ fans in a recent derby. He said: “Our fans take the vengeance out on the opposition.

“Particularly Mr. Van Veen, or whatever his name is, who slides in front of our crowd over there on his knees…the lucky ginger d***!

“You wait ‘til we play them again, that lot up the road. Who the hell do they think they are? We’ll show them!”
