Ian Holloway's frank view of Pontus Jansson exit and improved Leeds United defence

Ian Holloway has hailed Leeds United's impressive defensive record this campaign, and acknowledged the performances of loanee centre-back Ben White.

Speaking on Quest's EFL highlights show, the former QPR manager gave his thoughts on former Whites man Pontus Jansson, and the 'risk' he had in him at Leeds.

Leeds United sit in third place in the league 16 games into the campaign, and remain just two points behind league leaders West Bromwich Albion.

Yet while it seems Leeds haven't received as many plaudits as they had by this stage 12 months ago, Holloway insists the team does deserve the recognition.

'He had a risk in him, I felt'

"Attacking wise they haven't, but defensive wise they are better," added Holloway. "White has come in and been absolutely outstanding.

"They got rid of Jansson, a fans' favourite, but he had a risk in him, I felt."

Though Leeds haven't been as receiving as many plaudits as they had by this stage 12 months ago, partly because of their attacking play, Holloway insists they do deserve recognition for their defensive efforts.

The Whites registered a fourth successive home win against Blackburn at the weekend thanks first half goals from Patrick Bamford - his first since August - and Jack Harrison's second goal in as many games.

But despite the victory keeping the Whites only outside of the top two on goal-difference, they have still come in for criticism for their inability to match their dominance in most games with goals.

That has meant a lot of supporters have been calling for Bielsa to switch to two up front in a bid to score more goals. But Holloway, who has been out of work since May 2018, would not welcome changes by Bielsa.

"He can't ever change, I don't want him to change - he is who he is and he is a maverick," said Holloway on Quest's EFL highlights show.
